Rajgad Fort Night Trek
About this trek
Rajgad was the seat of Shivaji's kingdom for close to twenty-six years — longer than anywhere else — before the capital moved to Raigad. What survives is a hill fort spread across three fortified spurs: Padmavati Machi, where the water cisterns and the ruins of the palace stand, and Suvela and Sanjeevani reaching out along the ridges either side. The Balekilla sits above all three. We leave the city on Saturday night and start walking from Pali before first light, so the climb is done in the cool and the summit arrives with the sun. The path is a steady ascent with a few rocky sections near the top and no exposure that needs equipment. It is a long day rather than a technical one, which makes it a reasonable first fort for someone who walks regularly.
